COMPONENTS FOR EXTERIORS
RAFs for exteriors are flooring systems that incorporate special ceramic tiles on PVC pedestals of adjustable heights, so that a certain space is left between the substrate and the tiled surface. This kind of floor is typically used for terracing and on flat roofs subject to low to medium pedestrian traffic. The system is made up of pedestals of adjustable heights and special tiles for exterior RAFs.
PEDESTALS
The PVC pedestals act as a support for the tiles and also determine the height of the system and width of the tile joints. They can range in height from 10 mm to 580 mm. In addition to the final height of the base structure, the thickness of the tiles must also be calculated.
CERAMIC TILES
Special ceramic tiles for exterior RAFs are double porcelain tiles glued together with a flexible adhesive with a high bonding strength. The resulting tiles are thick enough to comply with the breaking strength required for this type of raised access flooring.
OUTDOOR RAISED FLOORS
Outdoor Raised Floors
RAISED ACCESS FLOORING FOR EXTERIORS
The raised access floor (RAF) system for terraces has been specially created to provide an aesthetic solution for terraces containing unsightly drainage slopes. By building a completely flat floor over the existing terrace floor, these slopes are conveniently hidden underneath. Height deviations are offset with height-adjustable plots and any accumulated water is drained through open joints on the newly paved surface and then channeled down the terrace's waterproofed slopes to the drain.
ADVANTAGES
The system can be used to create a flat paved surface over sloping masonry floors with height deviations of up to 2%. Any height deviations over 2% will need to be corrected with mortar or with wedges.
The creation of an air void under the newly paved surface generates a continuous flow of air through the pavement joints, which prevents the build-up of condensation and also produces an insulation layer.
The under floor void, can also be used to house cables, pipes, etc.
Easy to access this space under the floor (do not use P-404 to bond tiles and plots in areas where you need to access the services underneath).
The cavity between the raised floor and the living area below also helps to reduce the penetration of noise into the home.
The system is quick to install as the tiles and supports are installed at the same time.
Advantages of Ston-Ker: Easy to clean, low dimensional tolerances, wide variety of finishes, hardness, etc.
BONDED FACADES
Town White Nature 60 x 30 cm wall tiles.
Façade system
The Façade is the buildings outermost surface. The direct bonding of ceramic tiles means that possible stresses are in the end transferred to tiles. Thus, façade design, the bonding system and the products used must provide the proper levels of safety by guaranteeing that these movements are properly absorbed.
Installation joints
The fact that ceramic pieces remain highly rigid when movements and deformations occur makes it necessary to leave spaces between pieces so that they are better able to absorb these stresses. Therefore, from a technical standpoint it is necessary to render installation joints between tiles, leaving a minimum width of 5 mm (open joint). Tiles should never be installed end-on-end (butt-jointed). The product that should be used to grout these joints is colorstuk, from the professional line of cement-based coloured mortars for grouting installation joints (type CG2, as per EN 13888). The water in the mix should be totally replaced with cl-stuk, a synthetic resin-based latex. This additive helps to increase the imperviousness of joints, while enhancing the grout's flexibility and bonding strength.
Expansion joints
These joints are of fundamental importance in conserving the ceramic-tiled covering against the building's own structural movements as well as those brought on by external factors which may affect the façade. They help to reduce the stresses that may be transmitted to tiles and cause breakage or detachments. These joints should be rendered in those areas where the nature of the substrate changes, as in the case of windows, corners and shifts in plane along the façade. They should also be used in the presence of other structural elements, as with the union between floor slabs or fixed elements. Expansion joints should form sections no larger than 12-16 m2, with these being as square as possible; recommended joint width is 8-10 mm. To seal these joints, use s-502 acetic silicone-based sealant, which offers a high degree of elasticity and weather resistance.
Tile installation
The floating and buttering method should always be used, which consists of spreading the adhesive over the substrate and combing it using a notched trowel. Trowel size should be suitable for the tile format being installed. Afterwards, a thin layer of adhesive is applied to the back of the tile with the flat side of the trowel, so as to ensure full coverage of the tile when it gets pressed down into the adhesive. The adhesive's wettability (coverage) should be checked on a regular basis and should be practically 100%. As an additional safety measure in the Bonded Façade system, metallic fasteners are used to attach each one of the pieces. These fasteners are screwed directly into the substrate and are completely hidden once the façade is grouted. Thus, this effectively makes up for any installation errors and provides the façade covering with total safety.

Grohe-Digital Faucet

Remember those bronze taps with revolving knobs? It’s probably a thing of the past with the latest technology digitising the concept of taps.Until a couple of decades ago, bathroom was still a modest space with only the wealthiest of people being able to afford luxury at bath space. But today the purpose of a tap has become much more than just that. Today, a tap – no, call it a faucet — has turned into a status symbol. It’s no more a mere plumbing item. Now, nothing less than a Kohler, Moen or Grohe would do.Says Aloki Kumar, a 34-year-old homemaker, “The days when a plumber used to carry taps and fix them are gone. Now, while designing your home, bathroom accessories form an important part. A couple spends as much time searching for the right bath fittings, as they would do when looking for home furnishings. Although there are a number of fixtures available in the market these days, I prefer those that are less complicated.”Aloki, who is also a teacher and a décor maniac, confessed to have changed her bath fittings once every five years to keep up with the trend. “Designs are ever changing. And each design is a value addition to the previous one. Earlier my sink had two separate taps and my relatives used to get confused which one was hot and which cold. Now with the latest mixer taps that problem, at least, is solved,” she says. For Aloki choosing a faucet is simple. But you might find yourself spending the whole day choosing the right faucet if you are not sure what you want. Whether you want to go for just the basic, clean and contemporary, classic or sophisticated faucets, the available choice may confuse you. And then there are different parameters like colour, mount, and price. But companies like Moen make it a point to help a novice choose the right tap. A spokesperson from Moen, Utkarsh Batra says, “We found that many a times a customer doesn’t know where to start from. So we started an online faucet finder that lets a customer find the faucet that fits his budget and lifestyle.”And if you thought the sleek, uber stylish faucets are not tech savvy, you are mistaken. Adarsh Mohan, a spokesperson from Grohe, another company that manufacturers bath fittings, says, “We came up with a digitised range of bath fittings, named Grohe Ondus, to keep up with the ongoing digital revolution.” Bijoy Mohan, president, Grohe Asia, says, “What sparked off Grohe Ondus is the trend towards digital bathroom. Ondus, which is a revolutionary new range, has combined digital technology and design aesthetics based on sensual minimalism to deliver what is being called the iPod of the bathroom industry.” Mohan said the Ondus range starts from Rs 1 lakh onwards.Batra, from Moen says, "The times are changing and people's tastes are changing too. Earlier one tap was enough. Then people had two taps, one each for hot and cold water. Then two taps were merged to form a single faucet with two levers. But the double lever faucet, too, was not good enough since people had to waste much time adjusting the desired water temperature. Now, with ioDigital people can pre-set a temperature and enjoy an uninterrupted bath or wash. The temperature can also be adjusted through a water resistant remote control." He added that the ioDigital has been launched worldwide. In India, it has been test launched, with installations in select places for complete customisation. "We hope to launch it in the Indian markets by early next January. We are working on complete customisation of the temperature according to the Indian weather."Although the digitised faucet is the in thing right now, there are some who still prefer the good old tap. Kunal Seth, a bath fittings’ store manager based in New Delhi, says, “I keep bath fittings from all leading companies. But I also keep old bronze taps, since there are dedicated customers who still prefer buying those." He says for them old is gold, as they feel it is a lot less complicated.
